What Every Pet Parent Needs to Know About Antidepressant Toxicity

One of the most common reasons pet owners contact veterinarians and animal poison control centers is accidental medication exposure. Antidepressants, which are widely prescribed in human medicine, are among the medications most frequently involved in unintended pet ingestions.

While these medications can be life-changing for the people who take them, they can cause serious health effects when curious pets gain access. Pets often investigate dropped pills, pill organizers, purses, backpacks and bedside tables.

Antidepressants encompass several classes of medications, including tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) and atypical antidepressants. Common examples include fluoxetine (Prozac®), sertraline (Zoloft®), citalopram (Celexa®), venlafaxine (Effexor®), duloxetine (Cymbalta®) and bupropion (Wellbutrin®). Cats appear particularly attracted to venlafaxine capsules and may readily consume them if given the opportunity.

Some of these medications are also prescribed in veterinary medicine for certain conditions, but problems occur when pets ingest medications that were not prescribed for them or consume dosages well beyond therapeutic levels. Many antidepressants are rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and clinical signs can develop quickly (sometimes within 30 minutes) or be delayed several hours with extended-release formulations. Initial symptoms commonly include vomiting, drooling, agitation, restlessness, lethargy, dilated pupils or difficulty walking. As toxicity progresses, more serious effects can occur, including tremors, elevated body temperature, abnormal heart rhythms, changes in blood pressure, respiratory distress and seizures.

Another serious concern with some antidepressant exposure is serotonin syndrome, a condition caused by excessive serotonin activity in the body. This may occur with large overdoses or when multiple medications that affect serotonin are involved.

Prevention Is Key

Most antidepressant exposures are preventable. Store medications in secure cabinets that pets cannot access, and never leave pills on counters, nightstands or in open bags. If a medication is dropped, immediately remove your pets from the room, close the door and attempt to locate it immediately before a pet has an opportunity to find it.

What If an Exposure Occurred?

If you suspect your pet has ingested an antidepressant, seek veterinary care immediately, even if your pet appears normal. Early treatment can significantly improve outcomes. Be prepared to provide the medication name, strength, the number of missing tablets and the approximate time of exposure.
