The ASPCA Participates in the 36th Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade
On Saturday, October 17, the 36th Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade, led by New York Dog Parade and presented by Kismet, took place in the East Village of New York City. Thousands of New Yorkers and their elaborately costumed dogs came together for one of the city’s most joyful Halloween traditions. The ASPCA was proud to have been a part of the festivities, showcasing a few of our adoptable dogs!
Cloud, a 3-month-old puppy available for adoption through the ASPCA was held by John Legend at the parade kick-off, donning an orange “adopt me” badge to spread the word about dog adoption to spectators. After the event, Cloud returned to the ASPCA Adoption Center and was adopted later that day by someone who stopped by the shelter.
After the parade kicked off, the ASPCA introduced members of the public to available dogs, including Hippo and Grover, who met potential adopters throughout the day, and shared information about The Rescue Effect, the ASPCA’s national campaign to help more animals find loving homes. The ASPCA was joined by its longtime partner and Rescue Effect participant, Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC). “The Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade is a fun and creative way to celebrate dogs, and this year for Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, the event also highlighted the life-changing impact of pet adoption,” said Jessica MacLeod, senior manager, adoption promotions, ASPCA Adoption Center. “By supporting a shelter or rescue in your community through the ASPCA’s Rescue Effect campaign, you create space and resources for other animals in need, and if you’re not ready to adopt, fostering is another way to make a difference.”
A few days earlier on October 14, a preview event was held at the Empire State Building. In celebration of Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, adoptable dogs from the ASPCA and other animal welfare organizations were invited to the Empire State Building Observation Deck to show off their adorable costumes. Their looks were inspired by iconic pieces of Empire State Building history, from King Kong to Spider-Man. Take a look at some of these fashionable pups below!
