This week, at the request of the Wood County Humane Society, the ASPCA was on the ground in Northern Ohio rescuing nearly 20 dogs and approximately 50 birds in Wood County. In collaboration with the Wood County Humane Society’s Humane Investigations Division, our teams removed the inhumanely treated animals after they were found living in poor conditions.

Dogs were being housed in unsanitary conditions without access to clean water and suffering from untreated medical issues and were transported to an ASPCA facility where they will receive forensic veterinary examinations, medical treatment and behavioral care. The birds, who were also living in inhumane conditions, will be transported to Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary in Ravenna, Ohio, for ongoing care. Whispering Acres Farm Animal Sanctuary also assisted the ASPCA with this response.

“The ASPCA is proud to be in a position where we have the expertise and resources to assist local animal welfare agencies in improving the lives of animals across the country. We commend the Wood County Humane Society for recognizing the need for additional assistance and for their commitment to prioritizing animal welfare in their community,” said Teresa Ladner, Senior Director, of Investigations for the ASPCA. “We look forward to providing the rescued dogs with much-needed care and thank Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary and Whispering Acres Farm Animal Sanctuary for providing specialized support to the bird population.”

"We're incredibly grateful for the ASPCA's partnership in ensuring these animals receive the care, compassion and dignity they deserve,” said Nic Hardin, Shelter Director of the Wood County Humane Society. “Cases like this remind us why strong collaboration between local agencies and national organizations is so critical. Working together toward a shared goal is a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish. Our priority is always the welfare of the animals, and we're hopeful for their brighter futures."
