Guard Dogs

The ASPCA is not opposed to working guard dogs provided they receive proper treatment. Guard dogs should receive nutritious food, clean water, clean, dry shelter, and veterinary care, should wear a current dog license and identification, and receive sufficient socialization with people on a regular and frequent basis to allow for safe handling and an acceptable quality of life. Persons/businesses that train and/or sell dogs for guarding purposes should be subject and adhere to strict local and/or state regulations pertaining to the humane training and care of such animals.
